Edmund Lee Gettier III was an American philosopher, born in 1927 and died in 2021, who taught at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He is best known for his short 1963 article Is Justified True Belief Knowledge?, which challenged the long-standing definition of knowledge as justified true belief by presenting cases in which a belief is both justified and true yet does not seem to count as genuine knowledge; the article generated an extensive philosophical literature attempting to answer what became known as the Gettier problem.
