Denis Laurence Dutton lived from 1944 to 2010 and was an American-New Zealand philosopher of art, web entrepreneur and media activist. He founded Arts & Letters Daily, an influential web aggregation site for essays and book reviews, developed an evolutionary theory of aesthetics detailed in his 2010 book The Art Instinct, ran the Bad Writing Contest to critique obscure academic prose, and wrote on questions of authenticity in art and philosophy.
