Shuzo Kuki lived from 1888 to 1941 and was a Japanese art critic, philosopher and poet born in Tokyo Prefecture. He helped introduce Western phenomenology to Japan and developed a philosophy of contingency alongside engagement with existentialism, and he is best known for his 1930 masterwork The Structure of Iki, a phenomenological analysis of iki, a distinctively Japanese aesthetic sensibility.
