Sylvia Wynter is a Jamaican novelist, dramatist, critic, philosopher and essayist whose work draws on the natural sciences, the humanities, art and anti-colonial struggle to challenge what she calls the overrepresentation of Man, the assumption that one historically specific, Western conception of the human stands for humanity as a whole. Her scholarship ranges across Black studies, economics, history, neuroscience, psychoanalysis, literary analysis and film analysis, using each field to question the categories through which the human has been defined.
