Gustav Shpet

Gustav Shpet was a Russian philosopher, historian of philosophy, psychologist and art theoretician of interpreter descent, remarkably multilingual with knowledge of seventeen languages. A follower of Edmund Husserl, he was instrumental in introducing phenomenology to Russian thought, combining Husserls analysis of consciousness with Russian religious thought, Platonism and Orthodox doctrine. He founded the Institute of Scientific Philosophy in Moscow in 1921, served as vice-president of the Russian State Academy of Arts from 1923 to 1929, and authored A View on the History of Russian Philosophy and The Hermeneutics and Its Problems.
