Luis Villoro

Luis Villoro Toranzo, who lived from 1922 to 2014, was a Spanish-Mexican philosopher, academic and diplomat born in Barcelona to a Spanish father and Mexican mother who became a leading intellectual figure in Mexico, publishing more than ten books between 1950 and 2007 including Creer, saber, conocer in 1982 and El poder y el valor in 1997. His philosophical work centered on the metaphysical understanding of otherness and on the limits and scope of reason, examining connections between knowledge and power, engaging with indigenous American philosophy alongside Wittgenstein and Descartes, and analyzing Mexican political movements and democracy following the 1994 Zapatista uprising. He served as Mexico's delegate to UNESCO from 1983 to 1987, was named an honorary member of the Academia Mexicana de la Lengua in 2007, and received Mexico's Premio Nacional de Ciencias y Artes in 1986 for his contributions to history, the social sciences and philosophy.
