Alvin Ira Goldman, born in 1938 and died in 2024, was an American philosopher who was emeritus Board of Governors Professor of Philosophy and Cognitive Science at Rutgers University and a leading figure in epistemology. His early book A Theory of Human Action presented a systematic way of classifying the actions people perform. His later accounts of knowledge and justified belief used notions such as causation and reliability, which contributed to the approach known from the 1970s as naturalized epistemology, and he claimed that knowledge amounts to true belief produced by a reliable process.
