Chu Van An

Chu Van An, born in 1292 and dying around 1370, was a Vietnamese Confucian, teacher, physician and high-ranking mandarin of the Tran dynasty. He gained prominence as an educator who helped advance Confucian thought in a Dai Viet society that was then predominantly Buddhist, teaching at the imperial academy and shaping generations of scholar-officials in Confucian ethics and self-cultivation. He famously submitted the Seven Decapitations Petition to Emperor Tran Du Tong, proposing the execution of seven officials he believed corrupt, and after the petition was refused he resigned from court and spent his later years teaching and writing.
