Saul Kripke, born Saul Aaron Kripke in 1940 and died in 2022, was an American philosopher and logician who, while still a teenager, made foundational contributions to the semantics of modal logic and went on to become one of the most important analytic philosophers of the twentieth century. He is best known for a series of lectures published as the 1980 book Naming and Necessity, in which he argued that proper names function as rigid designators, referring to the same individual in every possible world in which that individual exists, a view he used to challenge the then-dominant descriptivist theory of reference and to argue for necessary truths that are known only through empirical investigation, such as the identity of water and H2O. Kripke's development of Kripke semantics for modal logic, his defense of essentialism, and his later work on rule-following and the private language argument in Wittgenstein's philosophy each had a lasting influence across logic, philosophy of language and metaphysics.
