Sun-Joo Shin

Sun-Joo Shin is a Korean-American philosopher and professor of philosophy at Yale University known for her work on diagrammatic reasoning in mathematical logic, including the validity of reasoning using Venn diagrams, the existential graphs of Charles Sanders Peirce, and the philosophical distinction between diagrammatic and symbolic reasoning. She completed her undergraduate studies in Korea, earned a master's degree at Ohio State University, and finished her doctoral dissertation, Valid Reasoning and Visual Representation, at Stanford University in 1991 under John Etchemendy, holding her first faculty position at the University of Notre Dame before joining Yale in 2002. Her books include The Logical Status of Diagrams in 1995 and The Iconic Logic of Peirce's Graphs in 2002.
