Home›Metaphysics›Ancient Greek And RomanGroupAncient Greek And RomanPhilosophers of the ancient Mediterranean world working on the nature of being, substance, causation and the cosmos, from the early Ionian and Milesian thinkers who sought a single material principle behind change, through the Eleatic school's argument that true being is changeless, the atomists who reduced reality to indivisible particles moving in a void, Plato's theory of Forms and the philosophers of his Academy, the Peripatetic school that succeeded Aristotle, the materialist metaphysics of Roman Epicureanism, and the late antique Neoplatonists of Alexandria and Rome who built a hierarchy of reality descending from a single transcendent source. Spans roughly the seventh century BCE through the fifth century CE, ending with the last pagan philosophers of the classical world before Christian, Islamic and Byzantine thought reshaped the discipline's own questions and institutions. Excludes philosophers who continued the Neoplatonic tradition specifically inside the later Byzantine Empire, grouped instead under Other Metaphysical Traditions.FactsBrowse BySourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsComparisonEra of EmergenceWell-attested6 BCE 1Browse ByAll Ancient Greek And RomanAncient Greek And Roman21 entriesAncient Greek And RomanFilter Results21 entriesSchool of PhilosophyAllNeoplatonism (1)Platonism (1)Branch of PhilosophyAllEpistemology (1)Logic (1)Metaphysics (3)Philosophy of Action (1)Philosophy of Education (1)Political Philosophy (1)EraAll-626 (1)-610 (1)-586 (1)-570 (2)-540 (1)-500 (2)-494 (1)-490 (1)-460 (1)-428 (1)-99 (1)204 (1)234 (1)TraditionAllClassical Greek philosophy (1)Epicureanism (1)Late Antique Platonism (Neoplatonism), founder of the school (1)Neoplatonism (1)Pre-Socratic philosophy (Atomism) (1)NationalityAllAncient Greece (Historical) (10)City-State of Athens (Historical) (1)Greece (8)Roman Empire (Historical) (1)United Kingdom (1)Influenced ByAllAnaximander (1)Anaximenes (1)Aristotle (1)Augustine of Hippo (1)Democritus (1)Gorgias (1)Leucippus (2)Melissus of Samos (2)Parmenides (2)Plato (1)Plotinus (1)Porphyry (1)Pythagoras (2)Ralph Waldo Emerson (1)Socrates (1)Thales (1)Zeno of Elea (1)In GroupAllAncient Greek And Roman (21)Birthplace / RegionAllGreece (8)United Kingdom (1)BrowseCompareSelect all 21AnaxagorasMetaphysicsAnaximanderMetaphysics1 linkAnaximenesMetaphysics1 linkDemocritusMetaphysics1 linkEmpedoclesMetaphysics4 linksHeraclitusMetaphysics1 linkHypatiaMetaphysicsLeucippusMetaphysics3 linksLucretiusMetaphysicsMaximus of EphesusMetaphysicsMelissus of SamosMetaphysics2 linksParmenidesMetaphysics3 linksPlatoMetaphysics18 linksPlotinusMetaphysics7 linksPorphyryMetaphysics6 linksPythagorasMetaphysics3 linksSopater of ApameaMetaphysicsThalesMetaphysics1 linkTheophrastusMetaphysicsXenophanesMetaphysicsZeno of EleaMetaphysics2 linksSources1.
