Reiner Schurmann was a German philosopher who taught at the New School for Social Research in New York from 1975 until his death, writing all his major published work in French. Deeply influenced by Heidegger, Meister Eckhart and contemporary continental thought, he developed a radical critique of metaphysical and political first principles that he called the anarchy of being and action, culminating in analyses of broken hegemonies, singularity and non-foundational practice; his work has been increasingly translated and discussed since his death, with a 2025 anthology noting the marked growth of academic interest in his philosophy.
