John Italos, also Italus, lived circa 1025 to after 1082 and was a Byzantine Neoplatonic philosopher of Calabrian origin whose father was a soldier. He came to Constantinople, where he became a student of Michael Psellos in classical Greek philosophy and succeeded him as head of the philosophical school; some of his tenets were found heretical in 1076 to 1077 by Patriarch Cosmas I of Constantinople, and in 1082 he was personally condemned after coming into conflict with Emperor Alexios I Komnenos.
