George Dickie

Aesthetics

George Thomas Dickie lived from 1926 to 2020 and was an American philosopher who specialized in aesthetics and philosophy of art within the analytic tradition. He is most renowned for developing the institutional theory of art, which generated significant scholarly debate, and his 1996 book The Century of Taste examined eighteenth century philosophers' treatment of taste, favoring David Hume's approach over Immanuel Kant's.
