Philosophy of Religion

Zera Yacob, who lived from 1600 to 1693, was an Ethiopian philosopher best known for his treatise Hatata, or The Inquiry, which explores reason, morality and religious tolerance. Born near Aksum in the Ethiopian Empire, he argued for reason as the criterion of belief over uncritical religious dogma, developed an ethical philosophy centered on harmony, and made arguments against religious discrimination and slavery, placing rational inquiry at the center of questions of religious truth.
