Javed Ahmad Ghamidi, born April 18, 1951, is a Pakistani Islamic scholar and philosopher, also described as a theologian, historian, linguist, political theorist and poet, who founded the Al-Mawrid Institute of Islamic Sciences and is regarded as one of the most influential and popular Islamic scholars in Pakistan. His works include Mizan, a comprehensive treatise on Islamic teaching, Al-Bayan, a Quranic exegesis, and Burhan, a critical analysis of contemporary religious thought, and his ideas include distinguishing Islamic jurisprudence from divine law, reinterpreting hadith within a Quranic framework, and arguing that democracy is consistent with Islamic principles. He served on Pakistan's Council of Islamic Ideology and received the Sitara-i-Imtiaz award in 2009.
