Gershom Scholem was a German-born philosopher and historian widely regarded as the founder of the modern academic study of the Kabbalah. He was appointed the first professor of Jewish mysticism at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the post from which his scholarship reshaped Jewish mysticism into a recognized field of historical and philosophical study.
