William Chittick, born June 29, 1943 in Milford, Connecticut, is an American philosopher, writer and translator specializing in classical Islamic philosophical and mystical texts, particularly the work of Rumi and Ibn Arabi. Described by other scholars as arguably the leading scholar of Ibn Arabi writing in English, he has published thirty books and numerous articles on Islamic intellectual history, Islamic cosmology and Sufism, drawing on classical Arabic and Persian training gained through study with Islamic scholars in Tehran during the 1970s, and he currently holds a distinguished professorship in the Department of Asian and Asian American Studies at Stony Brook University, where he has taught since 1983.
