Jeong Yak-yong, also known by his art name Dasan, lived from 1762 to 1836 and was a Korean agronomist, philosopher and poet of the later Joseon period, born in Namyangju in Gyeonggi Province. A close confidant of King Jeongjo and a leading figure of the Silhak, or Practical Learning, school of thought, he wrote extensively on philosophy, science and governance, producing influential works on jurisprudence and administration that combined Neo-Confucian themes with a reformist, practically minded approach to statecraft.
