Pak Chiwon lived from 1737 to 1805 and was a Korean philosopher and novelist of the late Joseon dynasty, born in Hanseong, present day Seoul. Regarded as one of the leading thinkers of the Silhak, or Practical Learning, movement, he argued for industrialization and expanded trade, urging Korea to import advanced technologies and mercantile practices from Qing China through what came to be called the School of Profitable Usage and Benefiting the People.
