Paul Thiry, Baron d'Holbach, known as d'Holbach, lived from 8 December 1723 to 21 January 1789 and was a Franco-German philosopher, encyclopedist and writer and a prominent figure of the French Enlightenment, born in Edesheim near Landau in the Rhenish Palatinate but living and working mainly in Paris, where he kept a salon. He helped disseminate Protestant and especially German thought, particularly in the sciences, but was known more for his atheism and voluminous writings against religion, most famously The System of Nature of 1770 and The Universal Morality of 1776.
