Jose Gaos

Metaphysics

Jose Gaos, who lived from December 26, 1900 to June 10, 1969, was a Spanish philosopher born in Gijon who was granted political asylum in Mexico during the Spanish Civil War and became, in the judgment of later scholars, one of the most important Mexican philosophers of the twentieth century, associated with the Madrid School and deeply influenced by his teacher Jose Ortega y Gasset as well as by Heidegger and Husserl. After holding academic posts at several Spanish universities before his exile in 1938, he taught for the rest of his life at Mexico's National Autonomous University, working chiefly in phenomenology, neo-Kantianism and historicism, and he became renowned as a translator, producing the first Spanish translation of Heidegger's Being and Time along with translations of Kant, Hegel and Kierkegaard. His own books include Filosofia de la filosofia of 1947, Introduccion a El ser y el tiempo de Martin Heidegger of 1951, and Historia de nuestra idea del mundo of 1973, and his students included the philosopher Leopoldo Zea.
