Susanne Katherina Langer lived from 1895 to 1985 and was an American philosopher, writer and educator known for her theories on the influence of art on the mind. She is best remembered for her 1942 book Philosophy in a New Key, followed by Feeling and Form: A Theory of Art in 1953, in which she developed a distinction between discursive and presentational symbols and explored how art relates to the mind's own process of creating meaning.
