Lieven De Cauter, born in 1959, is a Belgian philosopher who examines contemporary art, architecture, politics, and the city, based in Brussels. His books include The Capsular Civilization: On the City in the Age of Fear, published in 2004, and Heterotopia and the City: Public Space in a Postcivil Society, published in 2008. He also founded the BRussels Tribunal opposing the Iraq War and co-established the Platform for Liberty of Expression.
