David William Miller was an English philosopher and a leading exponent of critical rationalism, the school of thought associated with Karl Popper, for whom he worked as a research assistant early in his career. He taught in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Warwick, where he was a Reader in Philosophy, and served as Honorary Treasurer of the British Society for the Philosophy of Science. In the 1970s Miller and others identified defects in Popper's formal definition of verisimilitude, prompting decades of further work on whether Popper's approach could be repaired. His book Critical Rationalism: A Restatement and Defence argues that scientific rationality does not depend on having good reasons for one's beliefs.
