Krishna Chandra Bhattacharya

Epistemology

Krishna Chandra Bhattacharya lived from May 12, 1875 to December 11, 1949 and was an Indian philosopher affiliated with the University of Calcutta, renowned for developing a method he called constructive interpretation, used to draw out and elaborate the interrelationships within ancient Indian philosophical systems. His work examined how consciousness generates the experienced world, bringing rigorous contemporary treatment to traditional Indian thought, and he argued for what has been described as an immersive cosmopolitanism in which Indian philosophical frameworks were made contemporary through assimilation of outside ideas rather than simple adoption of European ones. His 1930 treatise Subject as Freedom, synthesizing neo-Vedantin, Kantian and Husserlian perspectives on human subjectivity, has been called the most important philosophical treatise composed in India during the period of British rule. He was the father of the philosopher Kalidas Bhattacharyya.
