Hadi Sabzavari

Metaphysics

Hadi Sabzavari (1797 to 1873) was an Iranian Shia cleric, philosopher, mystic theologian and poet of the Qajar era, born in Sabzevar and educated in Mashhad and Isfahan, where he studied the transcendent philosophy of Mulla Sadra in depth. After years of study and teaching in Isfahan, he returned to Sabzevar around 1836, where he founded a school of philosophy that drew students from Iran, Iraq, Turkey, the Caucasus, India and Tibet. He wrote roughly fifty two works in Arabic and Persian on philosophy, theology, logic and poetry, most notably Asrar al-Hikam and the versified logic and metaphysics text Sharh-i Manzumah. He is regarded as the foremost interpreter of Mulla Sadra's transcendent theosophy in the Qajar period, and his influence reached later scholars including Henry Corbin and Seyyed Hossein Nasr.
