Carlos Vaz Ferreira, who lived from October 15, 1872 to January 3, 1958, was a Uruguayan philosopher, lawyer, writer and academic born in Montevideo, credited with bringing liberal, pluralistic political values and pragmatic philosophical concepts to South American thought under the influence of John Stuart Mill and Herbert Spencer. He began teaching philosophy at the University of the Republic in 1897 and qualified as an attorney in 1903, and his most productive period between 1905 and 1910 produced his major works, Problems of Liberty in 1907, Knowledge and Action in 1908, and his foundational Living Logic in 1910, the last of which explored how language and systematic thought distort reality and argued for a pragmatic morality responsive to individual circumstance rather than rigid dogma, alongside an agnostic stance that still respected the value of spiritual inquiry. He served as vice chancellor of the University of the Republic from 1928 to 1941, notably defending academic autonomy during Gabriel Terra's dictatorship, and in 1945 founded the university's Faculty of Humanities and Education Sciences, serving as its dean until his death.
