Frege's puzzle concerns the semantics of proper names and arises from cases in which two names refer to the very same object yet a sentence asserting their identity seems to carry different cognitive content than a trivial statement that the object is identical with itself. Gottlob Frege introduced the puzzle at the start of his 1892 article "Über Sinn und Bedeutung," known in English as "On Sense and Reference," one of the most influential papers in analytic philosophy and the philosophy of language, and closely related puzzles arise for indexical expressions as well as for ordinary proper names.
