Author of Walden (1854) and of the 1849 essay known since his death as Civil Disobedience. A member of Emerson's Concord circle from the early 1840s, he lived for two years on land Emerson owned at Walden Pond and took Transcendentalist principle as a discipline of daily practice rather than a subject for lecture.
