Enrique Dussel, born Enrique Domingo Dussel Ambrosini in 1934 in Argentina and died in 2023, was a philosopher and historian who spent much of his later career in Mexico and became the leading founder of the Philosophy of Liberation, a movement that emerged in Latin America in the early 1970s. Drawing on continental philosophy, Marxism and liberation theology, Dussel argued that mainstream Western philosophy had constructed itself around the perspective of a dominant center, principally Europe and North America, while treating the colonized and impoverished peoples of the global periphery as objects rather than sources of philosophical reason, and he sought to develop an ethics and politics grounded instead in the perspective and dignity of those excluded others. He later developed the concept of transmodernity as an alternative to postmodern thought, one that sought to incorporate the excluded voices and experiences of non-European cultures into a genuinely global philosophical project rather than simply extending or rejecting European modernity from within.
