Bimal Krishna Matilal

Logic

Bimal Krishna Matilal lived from June 1, 1935, born in Calcutta in British India, to June 8, 1991, when he died in Oxford, and was a British Indian philosopher. He presented the Indian philosophical tradition, above all the Nyaya-Vaisesika, Mimamsa and Buddhist schools of logic, as a comprehensive system addressing most of the same issues taken up in Western philosophy, treating them not as historical artifacts but as a living, constructive program of continuing relevance. From 1977 until his death he held the Spalding Professorship of Eastern Religion and Ethics at Oxford University, received the Padma Bhushan in 1990, and founded the Journal of Indian Philosophy, establishing himself as a central figure in comparative philosophy and the study of Indian logic.
