J. N. Mohanty

Jitendra Nath Mohanty lived from 1928 to March 7, 2023 and was an Indian philosopher who served as emeritus professor of philosophy at Temple University. His scholarship bridged Eastern and Western philosophical traditions, with particular depth in German philosophy and Indian thought, including extensive writing on Immanuel Kant's critical philosophy. He founded the journal Husserl Studies and wrote a major account of Edmund Husserl's intellectual development, publishing more than twenty books and numerous articles across epistemology, logic and phenomenology while engaging classical Indian philosophy alongside continental European thought. He received the Humboldt Prize from Germany, a gold medal from the Asiatic Society in Kolkata, and honorary doctorates from the University of Calcutta in 2013 and Ravenshaw University in 2017.
