When Johann Wolfgang von Goethe called the Theory of Colours his most important work, ahead of Faust, ahead of everything else he ever wrote, he was not being modest and he was not exaggerating for effect. He meant it, and the claim tells us something about what kind of thinker he actually was. Newton had shown, a century earlier, that white light passing through a prism separates into a spectrum of colors, and that this spectrum could be reassembled back into white light. The mathematics was elegant and the demonstration was repeatable, and Newton treated color as a property that could be extracted from light through a physical apparatus, independent of any observer. Goethe did not dispute Newton's prism experiment. He disputed what it was allowed to mean. In his view, Newton had committed the error of taking as his premise a single phenomenon, artificial at that, building a hypothesis on it, generalizing from one manufactured laboratory event to a theory of color as such. Goethe's alternative began from ordinary looking rather than from apparatus. Color, on his account, is an elementary phenomenon in nature adapted to the sense of vision, arising from the polarity of light and darkness rather than from the decomposition of light alone. Darkness, for Goethe, was not simply the absence of light, as it is for Newton; it was light's essential antipode, an active participant in every color a human eye actually sees. He built his case from phenomena a reader could reproduce with a candle and a prism at home: colored shadows, the edges of objects seen through glass, the way twilight and dawn stain the sky. None of this refuted Newton's mathematics. It refused to let that mathematics stand in for the whole of what color is. The dispute mattered beyond optics because it was, for Goethe, a dispute about method, whether nature is best understood by isolating variables under artificial conditions or by attending patiently to phenomena as they present themselves to an embodied observer. It is the same commitment that drove his morphological study of plants, published twenty years earlier, and the same commitment that would later draw Hegel to incorporate Goethe's account of color into his own philosophy of nature, and draw the young Arthur Schopenhauer to Weimar in the winter of 1813 to work through Goethe's experiments at his side, before parting ways over how far the physiology of the eye, rather than the philosophy of nature, could explain what they had both been staring at.
