German philosopher, economist and revolutionary socialist (1818 to 1883) whose historical materialism and critique of capital, developed largely with Friedrich Engels, provided the theoretical core of Marxism. His The Poverty of Philosophy (1847) was written directly against Pierre-Joseph Proudhon, and his faction expelled Mikhail Bakunin's anarchist wing from the First International at the 1872 Hague Congress.

Mikhail Bakunin, Philosophers Marx's faction in the First International expelled Bakunin's anarchist wing at the 1872 Hague Congress after years of mutual polemic over the role of the state.
Marx wrote The Poverty of Philosophy (1847) as a direct, book-length rebuttal of Proudhon's The System of Economic Contradictions, or the Philosophy of Poverty.

The idea of analysing technology through the lenses of social power and justice goes back to Karl Marx, who, in The Poverty of Philosophy (1847), famously wrote: "The hand-mill gives you society with the feudal lord; the steam-mill, society with the industrial capitalist."
