Malek Chebel

Malek Chebel, who lived from 1953 to November 12, 2016, was an Algerian philosopher and anthropologist of religions, regarded as one of the most prominent North African intellectuals of his time. He studied in Algeria and later in Paris, where he also studied psychoanalysis, and he taught at universities worldwide. He coined the expression Islam of lights, wrote extensively on the Arab world and Islam, and was known for his public advocacy of a liberal and reformed Islam, including in his book The Manifesto for an Enlightened Islam.
