German sociologist, jurist and political economist (1864 to 1920), a founder of modern social science. His tripartite typology of legitimate authority, traditional, charismatic and legal-rational, set out in Economy and Society (Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft, published posthumously in 1922), remains a foundational framework for analyzing political legitimacy. Also known for The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism (1905).
