Noel Carroll, born in 1947, is an American philosopher and a leading figure in contemporary philosophy of art, recognized for his work on film theory, the philosophy of horror, mass art and cognitive approaches to cinema. He has criticized Marxist and psychoanalytic film theory and helped advance cognitive film studies, and his best known books include The Philosophy of Horror, published in 1990, and A Philosophy of Mass Art, published in 1998.
