Roland Barthes was a French literary theorist, essayist, philosopher, critic and semiotician. His 1957 essay collection Mythologies offered reflections on popular culture, and his essay The Death of the Author critiqued traditional approaches to literary criticism by displacing the author as the source of a texts meaning. He was a central figure in the development of structuralism, semiotics and post-structuralism, analyzing sign systems drawn mainly from Western popular culture, and his theoretical frameworks influenced multiple later schools of literary and cultural theory.
