Sophonias was a Byzantine monk, active in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, who wrote commentaries or paraphrases on several works of Aristotle, including De Anima, the Sophistical Refutations, the Prior Analytics and the Parva Naturalia, all of which still survive. Little else is known of his life beyond his probable service as an envoy sent by the Byzantine emperor Michael IX Palaiologos around 1295.
