A German philosopher, sociologist and musicologist, among the leading figures of the Frankfurt School's first generation. With Max Horkheimer he co-authored Dialectic of Enlightenment, tracing how the Enlightenment's own instrumental rationality could curdle into new forms of domination, including fascism and standardized mass culture; his later Negative Dialectics argued against any philosophical system that resolves the particular fully into the concept that names it.
