Critic, journalist and the first editor of the Transcendentalist periodical The Dial (1840-1842), succeeded in that role by Emerson. Author of Woman in the Nineteenth Century (1845). Died in a shipwreck off Fire Island, New York, returning from Italy with her husband and son.
