Graz School

Metaphysics

The Graz School, also called Meinong's School, was a school of experimental psychology and object theory headed by Alexius Meinong, who was professor and chair of philosophy at the University of Graz and founded the Graz Psychological Institute there in 1894. Its phenomenological psychology and philosophical semantics achieved important advances in philosophy and in psychological science. Meinong developed the school with the assistance of his students Christian von Ehrenfels, the founder of Gestalt psychology, and Alois Höfler, and later pupils included Fritz Heider, Stephan Witasek, Vittorio Benussi and Ernst Mally. Meinong's model of cognition became an important research foundation for Gestalt perception, and the school was part of the wider movement of Austrian realism.
