Ancient Philosophy

Metaphysics

Ancient philosophy is philosophical thought extending as far as early post-classical history, about 600 CE. The article on it notes that genuine philosophical thought, depending upon original individual insights, arose in many cultures roughly contemporaneously, and that Karl Jaspers termed the intense period of philosophical development beginning around the seventh century BCE and concluding around the third century BCE an Axial Age in human thought. In Western philosophy the spread of Christianity in the Roman Empire marked the ending of Hellenistic philosophy and ushered in the beginnings of medieval philosophy, whereas in the Middle East the spread of Islam through the Arab Empire marked the end of Old Iranian philosophy. It is recorded here as the broad tradition to which philosophical works are assigned when they belong to the ancient period taken as a whole.

Tradition Includes Work

Entity-backed identity for the tradition enum value this work already carries, resolved to a philosophy school by an explicit value-to-entity map (phase 3 bucket conversion, docs\design_entity_backed_browse_buckets_20260928.md). The tradition fact itself stays on the work unchanged.
